Orchestra of St. Luke's
We have expanded our partnership with the Orchestra of St. Luke's this year to include both 3rd and 4th grades. Our two teaching artists- Seth (our music specialist) and Jeramy (our dance specialist)- will spend over a dozen teaching sessions exploring various musical concepts such as simple melodies and rhythms in music. These sessions are in addition to the students' regular weekly music classes and are held on Fridays. They will also be exploring music that they will then hear at two interactive concerts throughout the year. The classroom teachers and I will be working with the teaching artists to enhance the connection between the musical concepts, the new common core standards, and our core subject curriculum. We'd really like to congratulate Jeramy on her soon-to-be mommyhood! We will be thinking about you and wish you well!
Link Up is a program that our third grade students participate in each year. They learn all about the instruments and sounds of the orchestra, study different aspects of musical theory and history, and learn to play the soprano recorder. Each student receives a soprano recorder and student lesson book with all of the music for the concert. We practice the recorder parts and learn to sing the songs so that we can participate in a fantastic interactive concert event in May. This program is used to supplement our third grade music curriculum at P.S. 51.
Musical Explorers is a program that our second grade students participate in each year. They meet musicians who live in New York City and learn all about their various musical styles and influences. They learn songs and movement that they perform with other 1st and 2nd graders from across the five boroughs at two interactive concerts during the year. Each student gets a unique music activity workbook that includes all of the songs and musical history and theory lessons that accompany the concert material. We use these materials to supplement our second grade music curriculum at P.S. 51.
We hope to bring back our ballroom dancing partnership in the Spring for our 5th grade students. It is always such an exciting event in our school that both the students and teachers love to be a part of!
Several of our grades will also be participating in our theater and literacy patnership with Story Pirates again this year. During the spring, students in select grades will work on stories that the Story Pirate actors and actresses will turn into mini-stage productions! What fun for your student to see his writing come to life on stage!
