Guitar and Ukulele Class- Our two guitar classes and ukulele class, sponsored by Little Kids Rock, are held during Abundant Waters on Wednesday afternoons. The program is open to 1st-5th grade students on a first-come, first-serve basis. Each child in the class gets to borrow their guitar/ukulele for the year. They are expected to practice 3-5 times a week. Click HERE to watch a video of class.
Recorder Ensemble- We have two advanced recorder ensembles. The 4th grade Recorder Ensemble meets Tuesdays from 11:50-12:15 during lunch recess. The 5th grade Recorder Ensemble meets Wednesdays from 11:50-12:15 during lunch recess. Both ensembles have between 10-15 students each. The 4th graders learn to play alto recorder. 5th graders choose between alto, tenor, bass, and sopranino recorder. Both groups continue advanced study on soprano recorder as well. Acceptance into these two groups is determined by the students' recorder skill achievements in previous years. Students must earn their black belt in Recorder Karate in the previous school year to be considered for these ensembles. Students are expected to practice 30-45 minutes a week outside of rehearsal.
Orff Ensemble- PS 51's Orff Ensemble is the enrichment group that meets during the Parental Engagement block on Tuesdays from 2:30-3:35. There are only 12 spots available in this ensemble, and there are no auditions. Invitation to this ensemble is determined by many factors including character, work ethic, interest, and not just musical skill. Students practice many musical skills during this time including composition, improvisation, and percussion performance techniques.
Chorus- The PS 51 Chorus is made up of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. We meet on Thursday afternoons after school from 2:35-4 pm. Skills explored include part-singing, music literacy, creating harmony, music analysis, and singing in foreign languages. Students are encouraged to practice 30-40 minutes outside of rehearsal each week to learn and memorize their performance pieces.
