K-103 Ms. Madera

I always knew that I wanted to be a teacher. As a little girl, I would sit my dolls at invisible desks and teach them what I had learned at school.  Later on, I would teach my younger brother at home.  I firmly believe that education is lifelong learning.  As John Dewey has said, “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself. “

I was born and raised in Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood (now known as Clinton).   I graduated from the City College of New York, a City University of New York with my bachelor’s degree in elementary education. I completed my master’s degree at City College of New York.  Although my master’s degree is bilingual education, I specialized in English as a Second Language.

I began teaching at P.S. 51 in 1986 after completing my bachelor’s degree.  I have completed over 15 classes in theoretical linguistics at the CUNY Graduate Center and continue to take courses to learn more about teaching!  I have been teaching over 25 years and have taught Kindergarten, Prekindergarten, First Grade and Fourth Grade classrooms.  I have also taught English as a second Language to Kindergarten through eighth grade, Spanish from fifth to eighth grade and physical education to prekindergarten through eighth grade when P.S. 51 was a PreK-8th grade school.    My teaching experience also includes educating adults.  I have taught English as a Second Language to adults in Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan.  I have also taught undergraduate and graduate courses in bilingual education and ESL.  This year, I am teaching kindergarten!

Greetings! It is wonderful to begin a new school year at PS 51. It is my second year teaching at this amazing school and I am elated to be part of the Pre-K team this year. I look forward to working with our future leaders. My teaching background consists of both the private and public sectors. I have experience teaching preschool (ages birth-five years), Kindergarten, First, and Second grades.

I have a BA degree in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences from Hofstra University, and an MS in Education. My certifications are in: early childhood education, childhood education, special education, and gifted education. I have been teaching for 6 years. My drive for teaching lies in my ability to connect with my students and make learning attainable for each of them. I am an educator by profession, but I teach from my soul. I take my work in the classroom very seriously and I enjoy the journey along with my students, every step of the way.
